Why Toxic Shame Kills Intimacy

If intimacy is on one side of the coin, the other side of that coin is shame. If you struggle to hold eye contact with members of the opposite sex, if you struggle with standing close to someone who you find attractive, if you struggle with intimate moments that may lead to the first kiss, in reality, you are suffering from shame.

On my training course a few days ago, we did a powerful exercise to showcase how you can become more intimate by reducing the shame that you feel in your life. So what happened is we had models attending my course who are very attractive, and I had clients of mine go through the process of standing closer and closer to women during a role play. And here’s what happened. As they got closer, their pitch went up, they spoke faster, and they became more anxious because shame was affecting their ability to communicate.

So during our role play, I switched the lens of attention and I said, rather than going higher pitched and faster, I want you to be slower and lower and more powerful. And what happened during the role play was that when my clients became calmer by slowing down their voice, by speaking in a deeper voice, step-by-step they were able to move closer to the women in conversation, and the barrier to becoming intimate was reduced. That intensity of shame was reduced because they were facing it head on. To become more intimate, you have to become or overcome shame. Same way to become calm, you have to overcome your fears.

And what happened during this role play was that after my clients went through this process, we tested it, and we had a general conversation where I moved my clients closer and closer to girls and they had to let me know the moment that they felt uncomfortable or tension. After this simple role play, what they found is that that intensity had been diminished and what this meant was absolutely life-changing. It meant that all of a sudden they could hold eye contact with members of the opposite sex. All of a sudden that toxic shame that they’ve been feeling their whole life. Some people’s shame is a lot stronger than other people’s, but the way in which we grow up in our society, everyone that I’ve worked with has some level of shame in their life. When you can overcome that barrier, intimacy becomes reality.
